The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the main judicial body of the United Nations, established in 1945. Composed of 15 elected judges, it settles legal disputes between states and offers advisory opinions on international issues. While it cannot enforce rulings, its authority depends on the consent of the involved states. The ICJ plays a key role in promoting peaceful conflict resolution and upholding international law. This case is about American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was detained in Russia in 2022 for allegedly carrying cannabis oil. She was convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison, prompting the U.S. to claim her detention was politically motivated and unfair. The dispute raised issues of legal protections for foreign nationals.
In this committee, delegates will serve as different figure heads ranging from experts on international law to teammates of Griner. The objective is to determine and provide a legal resolution to the Griner's situation and subsequently reduced tensions between US and Russia. Delegates will interpret international agreements and assess legal arguments presented by different parties, to reach a solution. This includes examining state responsibilities regarding the detention of foreign nationals, the right to fair treatment , and obligations under international law. Through thoughtful debate and legal discussion, the committee will issue a judgment that aims to solve the Griner case and promote peaceful dispute resolution between nations.
